| TECHNICAL LIBRARY | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The
technical Library on the Marine Watch web site is continually
being expanded. It will show items related to marine activities - especially
relevant to boating. Suitable items for possible inclusion are welcomed
by the webmaster. (bran@idl.net.au) Lengthy items
will often show the source from which further information can be sought.
There are nearly 300 items to peruse. BWMW cannot be held liable for the accuracy of any item - but will make changes when wrong or incorrect information is found to be displayed. |

| DECEMBER MEMBERS' MEETING |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The December meeting was attended by 24 members - two of whom were attending for the first time. With the Deputy Zone Commander chairing a confirming decision was made to distribute meeting minutes at each meeting rather than incur the expense of a mail out - especially to those who rarely attend. A valuable and long serving member - Ron MacKenzie has resigned from BWMW as he had sold his boat because of failing physical skills. A joint Marine Watch meeting was held in November with several BWMW members attending. A common problem being experienced by all watches was the inability to attract new members. This probably reflects an uncomfortable level of apathy among too many boat owners. The attitude that "Insurance will cover any loss or damage" seems to be too prevalent. The treasurer reported a healthy balance sheet with just over $8,300 in the account - an increase of over $2,000 from the same time last year. All proceeds from the 2006 Putt Putt had now been paid with $700 coming to Marine Watch. The only significant reports from sectors was that a 31' yacht had been stolen from a mooring in Koolewong - the owner was not a BWMW member. There had been no trace and the Police response was a disappointing comment that "the vessel was insured?" There was very disappointing news about the commencement of dredging in Brisbane Water. Despite previous assertions from the Brisbane Water Users Group that funding was imminent it now appears that there has been no firm decision to start dredging and in any case the new amount to be dredged would only be barong half of the original commitment. Members were advised to write to Gosford Council of any grounding incident. Other news from the Users Group was that the navigation lights leading into Hardys Bay are to be changed to make the entry safer - especially coming from the north. New Port and Starboard floating markers are to be added. After much discussion about the Putt Putt Regatta - mainly about the risk capital required to set up the regatta, it was decided to devote the next BWMW meeting in March to making a final decision on the manner of future participation of BWMW. This decision will follow an earlier meeting of the Putt Putt groups - BWMW, Kincumber Rotary and the local Putt Putt owners. Members were reminded of the existence of a BWMW Charter which states that the primary aim of BWMW has always been "minimise theft and vandalism to members' boats through a system of observation & reporting to marine authorities". A request was made to the Committee to review the Charter in light of current circumstances - no review had been conducted since 1998. The group was also exhorted to spend more time each meeting discussing security issues. The guest speaker for the night was George Steeden who is the NSW sales manager from RFD. He spoke about the wide range of RFD equipment dedicated to the saving of life at sea. He had brought with him most of the items for viewing - and demonstrated a PFD inflation. After the meeting the members enjoyed some Christmas cheer in the form of a light supper and drinks - generously prepared by some of the wives |

VISITOR MOORINGS |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There is a new manager for the Gosford Wharf. On behalf of the Gosford Council the wharf inside the breakwall at Gosford is now being managed by the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol at Point Clare. The most significant change is that priority for berths is given to visiting vessels which are able to stay for a maximum of four nights unless special approval is given. The berthing period runs from 1000 to 1000 on the following day and the fee is $15 per night. There are 14 berths with both water and power. Bookings can be made either by radio (either 27Mhz or VHF) or phone (4325 7929) and the preferred method of payment is by credit card. Other payment options are available but they will usually be less convenient to both parties. |
